Sinus Infections: The Stress Connection
What are Sinus Infections?
From a Western perspective, sinusitis is typically caused by inflammation due to viral infections, bacteria, allergies, or even structural issues in the nasal passages.
Sinus infections (otherwise known as sinusitis or sinus inflammation) are a very common health issue characterised by constant sinus congestion, pressure in the sinus and face, sinus headaches and can impact heavily on your ability to feel good and healthy in everyday life.
What causes Sinus Infections?
Sinusitis is typically caused by a number of factors that trigger inflammation in the sinuses. Viral or bacterial infections, structural issues such as a deviated septum or nasal polyps, or allergies (dust or pollens-such as seen in hayfever) can all be causes.
When the mucous membranes lining the sinus became inflamed or swollen, mucus is trapped and creates an environment perfect for bacteria or viruses to become lodged and thrive.
How does Stress affect Sinus Infections?
Stress plays a huge role in the effectiveness of the immune system which gives the body the capacity to clear inflammation and fight off pathogens like bacteria or viruses.
Chronic stress can suppress immune function in some cases leaving the body more susceptible to getting sick.
Stress can also impact on gut and digestive health-as seen in cases where client’s IBS or bloating may be triggered by stress. The gut plays a foundational role in the health of the immune system as well.
